Tucked away on the crest of the North Downs, about seven miles south of Gravesend, Vigo is a peculiar and quiet village that feels much further from the Thames estuary than it actually is. It was built primarily in the mid-20th century on the site of a former WWII Canadian army camp - a history still reflected in the names of the local roads - and is almost entirely enveloped by the chestnut and beech woods of Trosley Country Park. Life here is dictated by the landscape; the village is laid out with a network of footpaths and green spaces that separate the houses from the roads, making it a very walkable place where you are rarely more than a minute from the treeline. Practically speaking, it is a self-contained spot with a small parade of shops and a village school, but most residents look toward Meopham or Borough Green for rail links and larger amenities. It’s the kind of place where you’ll regularly see mist clinging to the ridges when the rest of Kent is clear, and while the steep climb up Vigo Hill can be a challenge in a heavy winter, the trade-off is immediate access to miles of some of the best high-altitude woodland trails in the county.
