Highnam sits just a couple of miles west of Gloucester, separated from the city by the braided channels of the River Severn and the lush meadows of Alney Island. Historically, the village was shaped by the Highnam Court estate, and the skyline is still dominated by the spire of Holy Innocents Church, famous for its intricate ‘spirit fresco’ interiors. Today’s village is mostly a collection of quiet residential cul-de-sacs that grew around the old core, offering a sense of separation from the urban sprawl while remaining within cycling distance of the Quays. You’ll find a well-used community centre and a primary school at its heart, but much of the local life revolves around the surrounding landscape. To the north, Highnam Woods provides a dense canopy of ancient oaks managed by the RSPB, where the spring birdsong is a local highlight. While the A40 runs along the southern edge, making it an easy jumping-off point for the Forest of Dean or the M5, the village itself manages to keep a settled, woodland feel.
