Hardwicke sits on the southwestern edge of Gloucester, positioned where the city’s suburbs meet the rural sprawl of the Severn Vale. It is a village of two parts: the "old" village centred around the Church of St Nicholas, and the more modern residential developments that have grown closer to the main arterial routes. Geographically, it is defined by the Sharpness Canal, which provides a level, picturesque walking and cycling route towards the city docks in one direction and the Slimbridge wetlands in the other. Historically, the area was largely agricultural and formed part of the Hardwicke Court estate; the Victorian reformer Thomas Barwick Lloyd Baker, who founded the local reformatory school, remains a key figure in the village’s past. Today, it functions as a practical base for those working in the city or commuting via the M5, yet it retains a distinct parish identity, supported by its own primary school, a busy village hall, and open green spaces that offer views toward the Cotswold escarpment to the east.
