Clinging to the steep hillside where the River Fowey meets the Channel, Polruan is defined by its verticality and its maritime history. Life here is dictated by the water; a passenger ferry runs frequently across to Fowey, providing a vital link for shops and services, though the village itself remains a distinct, self-contained community with two pubs, a primary school, and a single general store. Historically a hub for shipbuilding and privateering, it is still home to a working boatyard and the remains of a 14th-century blockhouse that once guarded the harbour entrance with a defensive chain. There is only one road in and out - a narrow, winding route that terminates at the village quay - meaning through-traffic is non-existent. Residents trade easy vehicular access for a landscape of interconnected lanes and "drangs," where the noise of the wind and the tide carries further than any engine. While the South West Coast Path offers rugged walking towards Lantic Bay, the daily reality is one of steep climbs and a high vantage point overlooking the constant movement of the deep-water harbour.
