Chilton sits on a limestone ridge in County Durham, positioned between the larger towns of Ferryhill and Newton Aycliffe. Historically, it was a mining village centered around the Mainsforth Colliery, which shaped much of the local layout until its closure in the late 1960s. Today, it is largely residential, split between the older terraced streets and more modern developments on the village fringes. Geographically, it’s a practical spot for commuting, as the A167 runs directly past the village, providing a straightforward link to Durham city to the north or Darlington to the south. You’ll find the basic essentials along the main road, including a primary school, a recreation ground, and a small number of local shops. While it has grown in size over the years, it still feels distinct from the surrounding urban hubs, bordered by open fields that offer a sense of space despite being so close to the region’s main transport arteries.
