Fairford sits on the banks of the River Coln, positioned on the edge of the Cotswold Hills where the landscape begins to flatten toward the Thames Valley. It’s a town defined by its practical layout - the broad market square and the A417, which serves as a vital link between Cirencester and Lechlade. Most people know the town for the medieval stained glass in St Mary’s Church, which survived the Reformation intact, but day-to-day life is more dictated by the presence of RAF Fairford to the south and the sprawling Cotswold Water Park nearby. The town functions as a self-contained hub for the surrounding villages, maintaining a high street with an active butcher, a post office, and several pubs that haven't been entirely overtaken by the tourist trade. Because it isn't tucked away in a valley like the more famous North Cotswold "honey-pots," it feels a bit more grounded and connected to the rhythms of the local farming and military communities.
