Gislingham is a substantial, quiet village tucked away in the claylands of North Suffolk, about five miles southwest of Eye. It’s a place shaped by its history as a farming community, with a landscape of open fields and a village layout that feels naturally spaced out rather than cramped. At its heart is the Grade I listed Church of St Mary, notable for its massive 15th-century tower and some fine medieval woodwork. For day-to-day life, the village is anchored by a well-used primary school and a modern village hall that borders the local playing field. There is a strong sense of a working village here rather than just a dormitory, bolstered by a small local shop and a pub, the Six Bells, which sits near the green. While the lanes are narrow and winding, the village is practical for those needing to commute, with the A140 nearby providing a straightforward link to Diss for the main rail line to London or north toward Norwich.
