Lying just a few miles south of Exeter on the western side of the Exe Estuary, Exminster manages to retain a distinct village identity despite its proximity to the city. Its landscape is shaped largely by the marshes - a vast area of grazing land and reedbeds that serves as a vital RSPB nature reserve. The village itself is built on a gentle incline, with older red sandstone cottages sitting alongside more recent developments, most notably the conversion of the former Victorian-era hospital site, Devington Park. For those who travel into Exeter, the village is connected by the A379, though many prefer the more scenic alternative of the Exeter Canal path, which offers a level walking and cycling route all the way to the Quay or down to the Turf Locks pub. While it has its own selection of local shops, a primary school, and several pubs, the village essentially functions as a quiet residential hub bordered by the Exeter Ship Canal and the main railway line, offering an immediate transition from suburban life to the expansive, flat horizons of the estuary.
