Ebbw Vale sits at the head of one of the steepest valleys in South Wales, where the industrial grit of its past meets the open landscape of the Brecon Beacons. For over two centuries, life here revolved around the massive steelworks that once occupied the valley floor, but the town has undergone a total transformation since the site closed in 2002. Today, that central area, known as 'The Works,' houses the local hospital, a modern college campus, and a leisure centre, all linked to the traditional town centre by a unique mechanical funicular called the Ebbw Blast. While the town itself feels functional and unpretentious, its greatest asset is the geography; you can be at the supermarket one minute and, five minutes later, be walking across the silent, windswept moorland of the Beaufort Highlands. It is also the northern terminus for the direct rail link to Cardiff, making it a practical base for those who need to reach the city but prefer living among the hills.
