Newton Hall sits just a couple of miles north of Durham’s historic city centre, occupying a patch of land that was once a significant country estate. While the grand manor house is long gone, the area evolved into one of the largest residential suburbs in the region during the 1960s and 70s. It’s a practical place to live, defined by its open layout and the fact that you can be out in the Durham countryside within a few minutes' walk. The locality is well-served by the Arnison Centre, a large retail park on its western edge, and it falls within the catchment of some of the city’s most established schools. One of the best spots nearby is Finchale Priory; you can follow the paths down through the woods to the banks of the River Wear to see the ruins, which makes the area feel a lot more connected to the county’s medieval past than the modern housing might first suggest.
