New Brancepeth sits on a ridge about three miles west of Durham city, occupying a quiet spot between the Deerness and Wear valleys. Originally built as a coal mining village for the Sleetburn Colliery in the mid-19th century, it has transitioned from an industrial hub into a settled residential community surrounded by reclaimed green space. The village is characterized by its traditional terraced streets and more modern housing, but its real draw is the immediate access to the Deerness Valley Way - a reclaimed railway path that offers miles of walking and cycling through the countryside. While the village itself is peaceful and largely residential, its proximity to the A690 and the outskirts of Durham makes it practical for getting into the city or accessing the wider Northeast. It’s the kind of place where the landscape has healed well from its mining past, leaving a village that feels tucked away despite being so close to the city’s amenities.
