Langley Park sits in the Browney Valley, about four miles west of Durham City, following the line of the old Lanchester Valley railway. Historically, the village was built to serve the local colliery, and while the pit closed in the 1970s, the layout still reflects its industrial roots with long rows of traditional terraced housing alongside newer developments. It functions as a self-contained community with its own primary school and a surprisingly busy high street that hosts a post office, local butchers, and several independent shops. Geographically, it’s a practical spot for those needing access to the city via the A691, but it remains surrounded by green space; the nearby Lanchester Valley Walk provides a direct, level route for miles through the countryside, following the old trackbed towards Consett. It feels like a settled, working village that hasn’t lost its sense of identity despite its proximity to the university city.
