Perched in the Deerness Valley, about five miles west of Durham city, Esh Winning is a village defined by its transition from a nineteenth-century coal mining hub to a quiet residential base. The settlement grew around the Pease family’s colliery and the subsequent arrival of the railway, though today the old lines have been reclaimed as scenic trails for walking and cycling toward Waterhouses or Ushaw Moor. Geographically, it sits in a dip surrounded by high, green ridges, giving it a self-contained feel despite its proximity to the city. The village centre around the primary school and the library provides the practical essentials, while the nearby Deerness Valley Timber Nature Reserve offers a space where the landscape has successfully reverted to woodland and wetland. While much of the original colliery housing remains, newer developments have expanded the footprint, all while retaining a clear view of the rural hills that mark the edge of the Pennines.
