Dulverton marks the point where the River Barle and the River Exe meet, creating a natural gateway between the rolling hills of Somerset and the open moorland of Exmoor. It’s a town defined by its topography; steep, wooded valleys hem in the settlement, giving it a sense of seclusion while remaining a practical hub for the surrounding upland farms. The town is built largely of local stone, with narrow streets that still follow a medieval layout, though much of the current character comes from its long history as a market town and a centre for the wool trade. Life here tends to revolve around the independent shops along the high street and the landmark Five Arch Bridge, which has stood since the late 18th century. It is a quiet place that maintains a self-sufficient feel, where the landscape is always present, and the transition from the town centre to deep woodland or riverside paths is a matter of only a few hundred yards.
