Nestled in the Drone Valley, Dronfield is a substantial market town that grew into its own during the 18th and 19th centuries, largely driven by the local coal mining and steel industries. Geographically, it occupies a convenient spot directly between Sheffield and Chesterfield, making it a practical base for those who need access to both South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Despite its size, it manages to retain a distinct town identity, centered around the High Street and the historic 12th-century parish church of St John the Baptist. Locals generally divide the area into the 'old' town and the more modern housing developments of Gosforth Valley and Dronfield Woodhouse. It is well-served by its own railway station on the Midland Main Line and sits right on the edge of the Peak District, meaning the gritstone edges and moorland plateaus are only a short drive away once you head west out of the valley.
