Known as the ‘Capital of the Wolds,’ Driffield is a sturdy market town situated at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, right where the chalk hills meet the flat, fertile land of the Holderness plain. It sits at the head of the Driffield Navigation, a historic canal system that historically connected the town’s flour mills to the River Hull and the sea. Even today, the town maintains a busy, self-contained feel; the wide main street still hosts a traditional market every Thursday, and there is a reliable rail link that connects the town directly to Hull, Beverley, and the coast at Scarborough. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the landscape surrounding the town is defined by high, rolling ridges and deep dry valleys, offering some of the best walking routes in the East Riding. It’s a practical place with deep agricultural roots, where the pace is steady and the community remains focused around its independent shops and the clear chalk streams that run through the town’s center.
