Dunscroft sits on the eastern edge of the Doncaster sprawl, effectively merging into the neighbouring village of Hatfield. It is a place rooted in the industrial expansion of the 1920s, originally growing to house the workforce for the nearby Hatfield Colliery. While the pit has long since closed, the village has retained its practical, self-contained character, revolving around the stretch of shops along Station Road. For those travelling further afield, the proximity to the M18 and the railway station at Thorne South makes it a useful base for commuting across South Yorkshire or towards the Humber. To the east, the landscape opens out into the Peatlands Way and the ancient marshes of Thorne and Hatfield Moors, offering a vast, rugged space for walking that feels worlds away from the suburbia of the village. It’s a straightforward, unpretentious corner of the Don Valley where the transition from town to open countryside is surprisingly sudden.
