Armthorpe sits just over three miles east of Doncaster’s town centre, positioned conveniently for both the town and the open landscape of the Humberhead Levels. Originally a small farming community recorded in the Domesday Book, its character was fundamentally reshaped in the 20th century by the sinking of Markham Main Colliery, which drove the village's expansion before the pit finally closed in the mid-1990s. Today, it operates as a large, self-contained village with a busy commercial centre along Church Street and Mill Street, supplemented by significant employment hubs at the nearby distribution parks. To the north and east, the built-up area gives way to the Shaw Wood and Sandall Beat woodlands, offering a natural buffer and a network of trails that contrast with the village's industrial heritage and its immediate proximity to the M18 motorway.
