Devizes sits right at the heart of Wiltshire, built around a medieval market square that still hosts a large outdoor market every Thursday. It’s a town defined by its independent spirit; you’ll find very few of the usual high-street chains here, with local shops and a long-standing Victorian brewery, Wadworth, still delivering beer to town pubs by Shire horse. Geographically, the town is dominated by the Kennet & Avon Canal, specifically the Caen Hill Flight, where twenty-nine locks climb a steep hill just to the west. While there isn't a train station in the town itself - the nearest being Chippenham or Pewsey - the road links are decent, and it serves as a natural gateway to the Vale of Pewsey and the North Wessex Downs. It feels sturdy and established, largely because many of its eighteenth and nineteenth-century buildings remain intact, reflecting its history as a prosperous centre for the wool and grain trades.
