Borrowash sits roughly five miles east of Derby, tucked between the River Derwent and the A52, which makes it a practical spot for anyone needing to get into the city or across to Nottingham quickly. It’s part of the Erewash borough and effectively runs into the neighbouring village of Ockbrook, though it has its own distinct character centred around the small cluster of shops at its heart. Historically, the village grew significantly during the industrial era, largely due to its position on the Derby Canal and the Derwent Valley Line, though the canal is now gone and the railway station closed in the 1960s. Nowadays, the most significant local feature is the proximity to Elvaston Castle Country Park; it’s just a short walk over the river and provides acres of woodland and parkland that many residents use daily. The village feels settled and functional, with a mix of Victorian terraces and mid-century housing, and it manages to keep a quiet pace despite its closeness to the main road networks.
