Perched on a high, windy ridge just inland from the rugged North Cornwall coast, Delabole is a village defined by its geology. It is famously home to the oldest and deepest slate quarry in England, a vast bowl-shaped landmark that has shaped the local industry and architecture for over 800 years; most of the terraced cottages here are built from the very stone they sit upon. Living here means being part of a sturdy, linear community that stretches along the B3314, located about three miles from the sea at Port Gaverne and the surfer-friendly beach at Trebarwith Strand. It’s a practical place with a primary school, a local shop, and a pub, but it is the elements that truly dominate the character of the village. The high elevation provides clear views toward the coast and Bodmin Moor, though it also makes Delabole one of the first places to feel the Atlantic weather, a fact marked by the presence of the UK’s first commercial wind farm on the village outskirts.
