Tucked away in the West Pennine Moors, Hoddlesden is a quiet, stone-built village that still feels distinct from the larger town of Darwen just two miles to the west. It was once a hive of industry, dominated by the chimneys of the pipe works and local collieries, but today it is much calmer, defined by its gritstone terraces and its position on the edge of the moorland. Life here tends to revolve around the village green and the Ranken Arms, and there is a real sense of being elevated above the valley, which brings both impressive views and some fairly bracing weather in the winter months. For those who spend time outdoors, the village is a practical starting point for walks up toward Pickakup Bank or around the nearby Hoddlesden Reservoir, and while it feels rural, the proximity to the M65 means the larger towns of East Lancashire are surprisingly accessible. It’s a place where the industrial history is still visible in the architecture, but the prevailing character now is one of Pennine peace and open space.
