Lying just a couple of miles south of Crook on the ridge overlooking the Wear Valley, Hunwick is a village that has retained a distinct sense of community long after its mining days ended. The settlement is centered around a traditional green, with the local primary school and the Joiners Arms serving as the hooks for village life. Geographically, it occupies an enviable position; you have the rugged edge of the North Pennines within easy reach to the west, while the more extensive amenities of Bishop Auckland are only a ten-minute drive away. The houses here are a mix of traditional stone terraces and mid-century developments, many of which benefit from the sloping landscape that offers clear views across the valley towards Helmington Row. While the deep coal pits like New Hunwick are long gone, their legacy remains in the network of peripheral tracks and footpaths that now provide quiet, green routes for walking towards the River Wear.
