Goostrey is a quiet, well-connected village in the heart of the Cheshire Plain, situated just north of Holmes Chapel and a short drive from the rail hub of Crewe. It has managed to retain much of its traditional agricultural character, with a landscape defined by flat, fertile farmland and a network of lanes popular with walkers and cyclists. At the centre of the village lies the historic St Luke’s Church and a small cluster of amenities including a post office, local pharmacy, and two pubs. Perhaps its most distinctive landmark is the Jodrell Bank Observatory; the massive Lovell Telescope sits right on the village’s doorstep and remains a constant fixture on the horizon. For commuters, the village is unusually practical for its size, as it has its own station on the Crewe-to-Manchester line, making it possible to get into the city or onto the national rail network quite easily without sacrificing the pace of rural life. It’s a place where the local primary school and the annual Rose Day festival form the backbone of the community, grounded in a history that stretches back to the Domesday Book.
