Box is a substantial village in the Bybrook Valley, positioned about three miles west of Corsham and five miles from the centre of Bath. It sits within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, characterised by its steep, wooded hillsides and the honey-coloured oolite limestone that was quarried here for centuries. This local stone defines the village’s architecture, from the medieval church of St Thomas à Becket to the numerous cottages that climb the valley sides. The village is perhaps best defined by its engineering heritage; it sits directly above the western portal of Brunel’s Box Tunnel, a landmark of the Great Western Railway that, upon completion in 1841, was the longest railway tunnel in the world. Today, Box functions as a practical, self-contained community with a range of essential amenities, including a primary school, a local post office, and a central recreation ground that hosts the village’s cricket and football clubs. The geography of the area provides a natural network of footpaths and bridleways, particularly around Box Hill and the surrounding woodland, offering clear views back across the valley. While its proximity to the A4 ensures straightforward road access to Chippenham and the M4 corridor, the village retains a distinct sense of separation from the larger neighbouring towns, sustained by its own independent shops, traditional pubs, and a long-standing musical connection through Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios located at the edge of the village.
