Perched on the edge of the North Pennines, Consett is a town defined by its dramatic geography and its transition from an industrial powerhouse to a green residential hub. At nearly 900 feet above sea level, it is one of the highest towns in England, which means the weather is often a few degrees colder than in nearby Durham or Newcastle, and the views across the Derwent Valley are remarkably clear. For over a century, the skyline was dominated by the Consett Iron Company, but since the works closed in 1980, the landscape has been extensively reclaimed. Today, the old railway lines serve as the starting point for the C2C cycle route, and the town acts as a practical gateway for those who work in the surrounding cities but want immediate access to the open countryside and the rugged terrain of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty right on their doorstep.
