Billington sits just across the River Calder from Whalley, tucked into the hillside beneath the dark, wooded heights of Whalley Nab. It’s a quiet, largely residential village that feels grounded in the landscape, with its rows of terraced cottages and newer homes climbing the slopes of the valley. Historically, the village was tied to the nearby Whalley Abbey, but its industrial character was shaped by the railway and the old cotton mills along the river. Today, it’s a practical place to live; the village has its own primary school and is home to St Augustine’s RC High School, which brings a fair bit of life to the area on weekdays. While Billington has its own local shop and a couple of pubs - including the prominent Swan Hotel - much of the daily activity gravitates toward Clitheroe or Whalley, both of which are easily accessible. The village is split by the A666, providing a direct link toward Blackburn, while the railway station in Whalley is only a short walk across the bridge, connecting the community to the wider Ribble Valley and Manchester.
