Chelmsford holds a distinct position as Essex’s only city, situated right where the rivers Can and Chelmer meet. It’s a place shaped by its geography; the central parks follow the sweep of the waterways, providing a green corridor that cuts right through the urban centre. Historically, it’s best known as the birthplace of radio, with Guglielmo Marconi establishing the world’s first wireless factory here in 1899 - a legacy still visible in the town’s industrial architecture. Practically speaking, it functions as a major regional hub, located about 30 miles northeast of London with a rail connection that gets you into Liverpool Street in roughly 35 minutes. While the high street is modern and busy, the city is surrounded by substantial pockets of countryside, and the nearby village of Writtle preserves a more traditional, green-buffed character just a short distance from the main shopping precincts.
