Carterton stands as a unique, purposeful town on the edge of the Cotswolds, defined largely by its close historical and geographic ties to RAF Brize Norton. Established in the early 20th century by William Carter as a colony of smallholdings for market gardening, the town evolved rapidly during the Cold War into the essential service hub it is today. Geographically, it sits on a level plateau of Jurassic limestone, roughly two miles south of the A40, providing a practical gateway to Witney and Oxford.
