Hersden sits about five miles northeast of Canterbury, positioned along the A28 towards the coast. Historically, its identity was shaped by the coal industry; it was established as a purpose-built mining village in the 1920s to serve the nearby Chislet Colliery. You can still see this heritage in the layout of the older residential streets and the red-brick architecture of the social club. Today, it has grown significantly, evolving into a self-contained parish with its own primary school, a local surgery, and a neighborhood park. Its location is practical for those who need to get around, as it provides a straightforward route into the city’s historic centre while being close to the Stodmarsh Nature Reserve for walks along the Great Stour. While much of the local life centers around the community centre and the local shops, the village remains bordered by open farmland, maintaining a distinct gap between the urban spread of Canterbury and the rural reaches of the Wantsum Plain.
