Willingham sits on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens, about ten miles northwest of Cambridge, where the land begins its gradual transition from the rolling hills of the south to the vast, level horizons of the north. Historically a major centre for orchards and market gardening, the village retains a working character and a sense of scale that distinguishes it from the smaller, quieter "necklace" villages closer to the city. Its heart is defined by the striking 14th-century Church of St Mary and All Saints, known for its rare stone-roofed sacristy and medieval wall paintings. Today, the village functions as a self-contained hub with a primary school, a surgery, and a varied High Street that includes a traditional auction house and a long-standing local bakery. While the Guided Busway at nearby Longstanton provides a direct link into Cambridge and the Science Park, the village itself remains surrounded by open landscape, with the Earith bypass and the Great Ouse nearby offering expansive walks through the fen edge.
