Lying just north of the Cambridge city boundary, Impington is a village that has largely merged with its neighbour, Histon, to form a single community sharing a busy high street and a range of local services. Historically, the area was defined by its orchards and the Chivers jam factory, and while the landscape has become more residential, it retains a distinct village layout centred around the Church of St Andrew, which dates back to the 13th century. It is perhaps best known internationally for Impington Village College; opened in 1939 and designed by Walter Gropius and Maxwell Fry, it was a pioneering experiment in providing education and community facilities under one roof and remains a striking example of Modernist architecture. For day-to-day practicalities, the village is extremely well-connected, sitting right by the A14 and served by the Guided Busway, which offers a reliable cycle and bus route into the city centre and the Science Park. Even with its proximity to the urban fringe, you can still find quiet pockets along the fields toward Milton or around the old parkland of Impington Hall.
