Sitting on the northern edge of Bury as the suburbs give way to the West Pennine Moors, Greenmount has a distinct character shaped by its transition from a nineteenth-century mill hamlet to a quiet residential locality. Life here tends to center around the junction of Holcombe Road and Brandlesholme Road, where the old congregational church and a handful of local shops serve as the village heart. It is a place defined by its topography; you are never more than a few minutes’ walk from the Kirklees Valley trail, which follows the route of the old railway line towards Tottington, or the steep climb up towards Holcombe Hill and Harcles Hill. While the mills that once drove the local economy are gone, their legacy remains in the sturdy stone cottages and the mill lodges that have since become havens for local wildlife. It feels well-connected but remains physically separated from the main town by the sprawl of Burrs Country Park and the surrounding greenbelt, maintaining a sense of elevation and openness that stays with you even on the greyest Lancashire days.
