Read sits on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley, positioned along the A671 between Whalley and Padiham. It’s a stone-built village that physically runs into its neighbour, Simonstone, though locals generally distinguish between the two. Much of the village’s character stems from its industrial past, specifically the 19th-century cotton industry, with the prominent Victoria Mill remaining a landmark. Geography defines the feel of the place; it’s largely a linear settlement that climbs uphill towards the moorland, offering clear views southward across the Calder Valley toward the Pendle hills. Facilities are practical rather than flashy - there’s a primary school, a local cricket club that acts as a bit of a focal point, and a handful of small shops. It feels fairly self-contained, yet it is only a ten-minute drive into Burnley or a short trip over to the market town of Clitheroe, making it a functional spot for those who need to commute but prefer a quieter, more elevated setting.
