Straddling the banks of the River Wye in Mid Wales, Builth Wells is a market town where the landscape dictates the local pace of life. Long established as a vital crossing point between North and South Wales, its identity is defined by the stone bridge and the expansive Groe parkland that borders the water. Historically a spa town, its Victorian architecture remains a prominent feature of the high street, which serves a wide agricultural hinterland and hosts a range of independent shops and essential services. The town sits on the edge of the Wye Valley and is overlooked by the nearby Epynt hills, providing immediate access to rugged terrain for walking and cycling. While most of the year it remains a quiet, functional hub for the Powys community, it is also home to the Royal Welsh Showground, which brings a significant, periodic influx of activity to the eastern edge of the town. Overall, it’s a place where the proximity to the river and the surrounding Cambrian Mountains creates a sense of being deeply embedded in the Welsh countryside.
