Buckingham sits in the north of the county, tucked into a sharp loop of the River Great Ouse. It was historically the county town, a status it held for centuries before Aylesbury took over, and much of its character still comes from the grand Georgian architecture that rose up after a major fire in 1725. Today, it feels more like a busy market town than a museum piece; the town centre is built around the Old Gaol - which looks like a miniature castle - and still hosts regular markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays. For those who enjoy walking, the town is physically dominated by its proximity to the Stowe estate, with the tree-lined Buckingham Avenue providing a direct, scenic link to the famous landscape gardens nearby. While it doesn't have its own railway station, residents usually head to nearby Milton Keynes or Bicester for fast trains to London or Birmingham, making it a relatively quiet spot that remains well-connected to the larger hubs of the South East.
