Broadstairs sits on the far eastern tip of the Kent coast, tucked between Margate and Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet. It is defined by its seven sandy bays, with the central horseshoe of Viking Bay serving as the town’s focal point since its days as a traditional fishing settlement. Unlike its larger neighbours, the town has retained a compact, flint-walled character, with many of the original narrow streets and independent shops still clustered around the harbour pier. Charles Dickens spent many summers here, and his presence is still felt in the architecture of Bleak House, which overlooks the cliffs. Practically speaking, it is a town of two halves: the busy seafront and the more functional upland area around the railway station, which provides direct high-speed links to London St Pancras. Life here follows the rhythm of the tides and the seasons; it remains a working town with a strong sense of community that persists long after the summer day-trippers have left.
