Failand is essentially divided into two distinct parts: the established village of Lower Failand and the more modern, elevated cluster of houses known simply as Failand. Situated just a few miles west of Bristol on the limestone ridge of the Gordano Valley, it acts as a quiet, green buffer between the city and the coast. Geographically, it is dominated by the sprawling Ashton Court Estate to the east and the National Trust's Tyntesfield to the south, which dictates much of the local landscape of ancient woodland and open pasture. Historically, the area was largely agricultural and owned by the Smyth family of Ashton Court for centuries, and that sense of rural space remains, despite the proximity to the M5 and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. There isn't a traditional village "centre" - the pub and the post office are the main landmarks - but the network of bridleways and footpaths through 50-Acre Wood and along the ridge provides a practical, direct connection to the surrounding Somerset countryside.
