Brighouse sits in the Lower Calder Valley, positioned where the hills of the Pennines begin to level out toward the east of West Yorkshire. Historically, the town grew around the river crossing that gives it its name, evolving from a small hamlet into a busy textile and milling hub during the Industrial Revolution. Today, the town centre is defined by its compact, walkable layout and the presence of the Calder and Hebble Navigation, which provides a steady route for narrowboats and quiet towpath walks towards Elland or Mirfield. It is exceptionally well-connected, sitting just off Junction 25 of the M62, which makes it a practical base for reaching the major centres of Leeds, Manchester, and Huddersfield. The railway station is a key asset, offering direct services to London King’s Cross as well as local trans-Pennine routes. While the skyline is still punctuated by old stone chimneys and Victorian architecture, the atmosphere is grounded and functional, supported by a strong tradition of independent shops and an active community that centers many of its local events around the town’s canal-side heritage.
