Bridgwater sits on the edge of the Somerset Levels, centered around the tidal River Parrett and the historic docks that once made it a major industrial port. It is a town defined by its practical infrastructure; it’s an easy jump onto the M5, and the railway station provides direct links to Bristol, Exeter, and London. While it is rapidly growing as a hub for the green energy and logistics sectors due to the nearby Hinkley Point C development, it retains its identity as a traditional market town. You’ll find the town center holds onto a good mix of independent shops alongside the larger modern retailers, and if you head a few miles in any direction, you’re either deep in the Quantock Hills or heading toward the coast. It’s a grounded, functional place with a long history of maritime trade and a distinct civic spirit that comes alive every November during the town’s famous illuminated carnival.
