Alveley sits on the eastern high ground above the Severn Valley, roughly midway between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster. It is a substantial village with a long history, appearing in the Domesday Book, though its character today is shaped as much by its industrial past as its agricultural roots. The local landscape is dominated by the Severn Valley Country Park, which reclaimed the site of the former Alveley Colliery; it now offers miles of walking trails and a footbridge link over the river to Highley. Within the village, the sandstone Church of St Mary stands as a central landmark, and there is a mix of traditional black-and-white timbered buildings alongside more modern housing. Practical amenities are decent for a village of this size, including a primary school, a couple of well-regarded pubs, and a local shop, while the A442 provides straightforward road access to the larger market towns nearby. The heritage steam trains of the Severn Valley Railway are a frequent sight and sound in the valley below, adding a distinct atmosphere to this corner of southeast Shropshire.
