Tucked away at the northern head of the Garw Valley, about seven miles from Bridgend, Pontycymer sits where the Nant Gelliwern meets the River Garw. It was once a powerhouse of the South Wales coal industry, and you can still see that heritage in the long rows of steep, terraced streets that climb the valley sides, offering clear views of the surrounding hills. Today, the village is much quieter, serving as a gateway to the mountains for walkers and cyclists, with several trails leading directly from the settlement up onto the high ridges. While the local shops and amenities cater to daily needs along Oxford Street, the landscape remains the dominant feature here; the weather can be temperamental given the elevation, but there is a distinct sense of space and ruggedness that characterizes life at the top of the valley.
