Borth is a coastal village in Ceredigion, defined by its long, narrow stretch of houses tucked between the Irish Sea and the peat bogs of Cors Fochno. Life here is dictated by the tide; at the southern end, the cliffs of the Ceredigion Coast Path rise up toward Aberystwyth, while to the north, the village peters out into the expansive dunes of Ynyslas. It is perhaps best known for the prehistoric forest - stumps of oak and pine over 4,000 years old - that emerge from the sand at low tide, a stark reminder of the shifting coastline. Local amenities are concentrated along the single main street, which follows the curve of the bay, and the village remains well-connected by a railway station on the Cambrian Line. Because the land is so flat and squeezed between the sea and the marsh, it has a distinct, open atmosphere that feels quite different from the sheltered valleys further inland, though it does mean the weather and the salt air are constant features of daily life.
