Billingham is a town of two distinct halves, defined by its industrial heritage and its surprisingly green residential pockets. Situated in the Teesside area of County Durham, just north of the River Tees, it grew rapidly in the early 20th century around the massive ICI chemical works, which still dictates the skyline to the south. However, much of the town itself is characterized by spacious mid-century housing and generous parklands like John Whitehead Park. The town centre is largely pedestrianised and feels practical rather than flashy, housing the distinctive Billingham Forum - a local landmark that remains a hub for skating and swimming. To the north, the landscape opens up into the Wynyard woodland and the North Tees marshes, offering a stark but beautiful contrast to the nearby heavy industry. It’s a place where the proximity to major roads like the A19 makes commuting straightforward, yet it retains a quiet, established feel that reflects its roots as a planned industrial township.
