Berkhamsted sits in a natural valley of the Chiltern Hills, where the ancient Akeman Street meets the River Bulbourne and the Grand Union Canal. It’s a town defined largely by its linear geography; life tends to cluster along the long High Street or around the remains of the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle, where William the Conqueror received the English surrender in 1066. While it has grown considerably since its days as a market town for the wool trade, it retains a distinct character shaped by its historic timber-framed buildings and the presence of the independent Berkhamsted School, which has occupied a central spot in the town since 1541. The commute to London Euston takes about half an hour, making it a functional base for those working in the city, yet the immediate surroundings offer steep climbs up to the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate. It’s a place where you’ll find narrow, one-way residential streets climbing the valley sides, an Art Deco cinema that still serves as a local hub, and a towpath that provides a flat, steady walking route toward Tring or Hemel Hempstead.
