Belvedere sits on the southern side of the Thames, tucked between Abbey Wood and Erith in the London Borough of Bexley. It is a place defined by its topography; the area is split into ‘Upper Belvedere’ on the wooded ridge and ‘Lower Belvedere’ on the marshes, once home to the sprawling Victorian engineering works of the Thamesmead borders. At its heart is Nuxley Village, which still feels like a proper local hub with its own independent shops and the distinctive Splash Park. Historically, the area grew from the grounds of Belvedere House - a grand 18th-century estate that gave the town its name (literally 'beautiful view') - and you can still find pockets of that original greenery in Lesnes Abbey Woods nearby. These days, it serves as a practical base for London workers, benefiting from the arrival of the Elizabeth line just down the road, while retaining a quieter, more suburban pace than its neighbours closer to the city.
