Straddling the River Derwent just south of Belper, Milford is a village defined by its steep gritstone valley slopes and its industrial heritage. It forms a key part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, largely built to serve Jedediah Strutt’s 18th-century cotton mills. While the massive mill buildings that once dominated the riverbanks were mostly demolished in the 1960s, the village's character remains rooted in the past through its sturdy terraced cottages, the impressive multi-arched bridge, and the remnants of the water-power systems. Today, it’s a quiet but well-connected spot; the A6 runs straight through the centre, providing a direct link to Derby and the Peak District, while the nearby railway station in Belper connects residents to the wider network. It’s a place where you can walk from a traditional riverside pub straight onto the hillside footpaths of the Chevin, offering a practical balance between accessible village life and the rugged geography of the Derbyshire landscape.
