Stewartby is a unique model village located about six miles south of Bedford, originally established by the London Brick Company for its workers. Its identity is inseparable from the local industry; the landscape is still defined by the remaining brickworks chimneys and the "Marston Vale" pits, many of which have been flooded to create wetlands and nature reserves like the Forest Centre at Marston Moretaine. Geographically, it sits within a flat, open landscape that feels remarkably spacious, though it remains practical for commuting via the local railway station on the Marston Vale Line, which links to Bedford and Bletchley. While much of the original 1920s cottage-style architecture remains in the designated conservation area, the village has expanded recently with newer housing. It’s a quiet, functional community with a strong sense of its own history, tucked between the A421 and the Kimmeridge Clay seams that built much of 20th-century London.
