St Athan is a large, grounded village in the Vale of Glamorgan, positioned just a few miles west of Barry and within easy reach of the coast at Gileston. For much of the last century, its identity has been defined by the expansive MoD base and the aerospace infrastructure that still dominates the local landscape, though recent years have seen the village transition into a more residential character. Geographically, it sits on a flat, fertile plateau, where quiet country lanes quickly lead to the dramatic cliffs of the Heritage Coast. Life here tends to centre on the historic core around the 14th-century church of St Tathan, where a small cluster of pubs and shops provides a traditional village feel despite the modern developments on the outskirts. While it feels rural, its position on the B4265 makes it a practical spot for getting into Cardiff or Bridgend, offering a sense of space without being disconnected from the region's main industrial and commercial hubs.
