Banbury is a practical, sturdy market town sitting right on the Oxfordshire-Northamptonshire border, serving as a natural hub for the surrounding ironstone villages. It owes much of its layout to its position on the River Cherwell and its history as a major waypoint on the Oxford Canal, though today most people know it for the massive coffee roasting plant on the edge of town that occasionally scents the air. The town centre is a mix of medieval lanes and the more modern Castle Quay shopping area, all radiating out from the famous (though rebuilt) stone cross. Geographically, it’s hard to beat for logistics; it sits squarely on the M40 and the Chiltern Main Line, making both Birmingham and London accessible in under an hour. While it has grown significantly with new developments to the north and west, it retains a functional, down-to-earth character, anchored by a traditional Thursday market that has been running for centuries.
